One Not To Miss - King Princess

With an accumulated 90 Million Spotify streams on just two songs, 19-year-old Mikaela Straus is already making a name for herself as a creative, pop, genius.

Her first single, 1950, inspired by Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt, the novel that was adapted into 2015 film Carol. The song pays tribute to the difficulties faced by the queer community in the 1950's and the artistic methods used as a form of self-expression during this time. It tells a story of unrequited love and the fear and pain that can come from it. King Princess's soulful voice takes the lyrics to a place of authenticity while the self-produced track provides all the ideals to make a pop hit.

A native New Yorker, Straus turned down her first record deal at just 11 years of age but now takes the prize for the first artist signed to Mark Ronson's new label, 'Zelig', a branch of Columbia. King Princess took to the stage at the BMI Pop awards with Ronson to perform the Lady Gaga hit Joanne. This connection perhaps explains how fellow Columbia signee Harry Styles was an early advocate of the debut single, tweeting its lyrics out to his millions of followers.

King Princess's songwriting and instrumental prowess are not overshadowed but rather enhanced by her cool demeanour. Not shy of extravagance, as demonstrated in her music videos and by her online presence, she appears to maintain a mature and collected persona for her age which pairs perfectly with her well developed musical ability.

Her second single, Talia, was released in April 2018. The accompanying video was edited by fellow young creative, Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games, Everything, Everything) and is a strong example of the creative offerings of the young queer community in 2018.
Aside from the official releases Talia and 1950, King Princess released a number of tracks exclusively to SoundCloud but her EP Make My Bed is due for release Friday, June 15th.
