One Not to Miss - Velvet Volume

Isn’t a proper girl rock band what we all really want? Well, the hard-hitting trio is a full-on powerhouse on stage and their songs only get more wild as they come.

The three sisters from Aarhus, Denmark are behind the flamboyant rock band Velvet Volume, with the twins Noa and Naomi being behind the vocals, guitar and bass, while their younger sister sits by the drums. Starting playing music at the early age of five and three, Velvet Volume only properly came together in 2013 after playing their local festival ‘Grim Fest’. By respectable amateur manner, they rocked up with grocery bags filled with their necessary equipment to play their first ever live show. Although, starting from such a young age, it didn’t take the three sisters long to play themselves into the hearts of the local rock fans with their youthful honesty. They might even now be one of the most talked about bands on the Danish music scene.

They have since then released a handful of singles, while their debut album, Look Look Look!, got released in October last year. The band’s mix of heavy guitar riffs and old-school rock vocals clearly shows why they have been compared to the likes of Blondie, The Runways and Sleater-Kinney.

The video of their single of the same name as their LP, Look Look Look!, entices you into the dream world of the young women with mysterious playfulness. The rogue sisters might be singing about the restlessness relating to figuring out the structure of living your life and growing up. However, there is definitely nothing slowing these enigmatic three Danes down as they are powering through their music career.

While the music video for ‘Look, Look, Look’ is such a contrast to what the girls’ image really is, their latest single release, Fire, shows distinct references to The White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age with fast rhythms and loud guitars.

The three girls have already supported the likes of The Raveonettes and The Blue Van, played at Denmark’s Crown Prince Couple’s Awards to a TV audience of 1.4 million viewers (damn!), and the most important factor, they recorded the theme song for the Danish version of The Powerpuff Girls on Cartoon Network!

It is clear that the band are slowly getting used to a bigger audience as they are gradually receiving impressive reviews. Being influenced by acts like Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie, I can’t wait for more good guitar riffs and melodic rock tunes when they take the world by storm next. And I bet you will get hungry for more as well after giving them a good listen.

Their debut album, Look Look Look!, is available to stream on Spotify right here:
