Sun Arcana- The Finsbury review

Hosted at the acclaimed Finsbury Pub, Sun Arcana delivered a tight set last month at their headlining performance. By first impression, the band could easily be confused as an indie rock band as they maintain a cool aura most associated with hipsters, however, once on stage, the music is an undeniable melange of hard rock and grunge.

It is evident to all who listen that they take time to perfect their craft. Though mistakes on stage are inevitable, it is very noticeable when a band is very much off its mark and when a band is hitting all the right notes; Sun Arcana would be the latter. Their tunes are not for the faint of heart, to say the least. Adjectives that contrarily describe them would be mellow, easy listening, and go-with-the-flow. Within their songs, all instruments and vocals possess a raw emotion to them. With twinges of the guitar riffs reminiscent of the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, they deliver a powerful performance leaving the audience awestruck of what is being delivered.

Also noteworthy of Sun Arcana is the dynamic of the band on stage. Being poised and at ease with one another is a practice that takes many groups years to hone. Sun Arcana, on the other hand, look as if they’ve been playing with decades worth of familiarity bred between them. The importance of this might not immediately seem of much consequence, however, there is nothing more awkward and arduous than listening to a band that seems fractured and not in tune with one another.

One of their singles out now, ‘Wonderful’, is a prime encapsulation of the band in one. Though commencing with a punchy and intense guitar riff, there are moments of vulnerability, especially in the main vocals. Flirting with the characteristics of a metal rock song, it’s an effective and progressive tune that reaches a broad audience of intriguing listeners.

Having graduated just last year from UWL, we look forward to hearing more of what Sun Arcana have to deliver, as their sound is a refreshing hard rock not found in many mainstream contemporary bands.
